BT Bell Supports Delivery of New Asphalt Coating Plant at Tarmac’s Barrasford Quarry

BT Bell Consulting Engineers is proud to have played a key role in delivering the new asphalt coating plant at Tarmac's Barrasford Quarry in Northumberland. Specifically, our team provided complete civil and structural engineering design services throughout the project.

Overall, the new facility represents a major infrastructure investment in the North East. It significantly increases production capacity while using modern, sustainable technologies to improve operational efficiency. Most importantly, the plant utilizes higher levels of recycled asphalt planings (RAP). As a result, this process reduces raw material consumption and lowers overall carbon emissions.

Our Role in the Project

Throughout the development, BT Bell managed the civil and structural design required for the new plant installation. In particular, our scope of work encompassed:

  • Foundation design for the asphalt coating plant and associated heavy machinery.

  • Civil works design, including revised site levels, heavy access roads, and site drainage.

  • Specialist collaboration, working alongside mechanical and electrical contractors to ensure seamless structural integration.

Crucially, quarry developments present unique operational constraints. Therefore, our engineering team developed tailored solutions that prioritized site safety, structural durability, and efficient construction. By engaging early with Tarmac and key stakeholders, we ensured the project met both operational demands and strict regulatory standards.

Historically, Barrasford Quarry near Hexham has supplied high-quality aggregates across the North East for decades. Today, this new asphalt coating plant ensures the site remains well-positioned to support ongoing road building and maintenance. Furthermore, Quarry Management magazine featured the project in its July 2026 issue, highlighting its successful delivery.
