BT Bell Delivering Earthworks and Civil Design for New Rail Siding at West Fraser’s Inverness OSB Plant

BT Bell is delivering rail siding earthworks and civil design for a major new rail freight connection at West Fraser’s oriented strand board (OSB) plant near Inverness.

Specifically, our engineering team provided technical design solutions for the subgrade, earthworks, and surrounding infrastructure. Furthermore, this strategic project enables direct rail connections between the manufacturing plant and the main rail network.

Engineering Scope and Site Delivery

Throughout the development, our team focused on preparing a stable, high-capacity ground platform. Crucially, designing heavy earthworks across variable ground conditions requires precise geotechnical evaluation.

Recently, key civil engineering deliverables for the project include:

  • Earthworks Formation: Designing bulk cut-and-fill operations to form a level rail corridor. Additionally, we specified subgrade stabilization for long-term load support.

  • Drainage Integration: Engineering sustainable surface water drainage networks. Also, we incorporated attenuation features along the track footprint.

  • Pavement & Hardstanding: Designing durable access roads. Simultaneously, our team developed container storage hardstanding for heavy freight handling.

Environmental Impact and Infrastructure Delivery

Historically, large manufacturing facilities depend on road transport for freight. However, West Fraser’s new rail connection shifts significant volume from road to rail.

Because of this, the facility removes thousands of lorry journeys from the road network each year. As a result, the project drastically lowers carbon emissions across the region. Ultimately, delivering successful infrastructure highlights the power of modern civil engineering.
