Progress at Finstown Substation
BT Bell is pleased to report ongoing substation civil engineering progress at the new Finstown Substation development in Orkney.
Specifically, our engineering team provides civil design expertise and technical oversight for this vital energy infrastructure project. Furthermore, works continue to advance across the main site footprint to prepare the platform for high-voltage equipment installation.
Key On-Site Civil Engineering Milestones
Throughout the recent construction phase, site operations focused heavily on large-scale ground preparation. Crucially, establishing a stable, well-drained platform in complex island terrain requires careful civil design.
Recently, key progress on site includes several major achievements:

Bulk Earthworks: Completing major site cut-and-fill operations to form the main substation platform. Additionally, we managed subgrade compaction across the entire footprint.

Drainage Systems: Installing heavy-duty perimeter drainage and attenuation features. Also, our team implemented effective surface water management controls.

Access Infrastructure: Delivering durable site access roads. Simultaneously, we completed heavy vehicle hardstanding areas to support transformer deliveries.
