Crossaig 275/132kV Substation
BT Bell provided civil and structural engineering design services for the Crossaig 275/132kV Substation in Argyll, which formed part of SSEN Transmission’s major reinforcement of the electricity network across Argyll and Kintyre.
The development enabled the existing transmission network to operate at 275kV, providing increased capacity for renewable energy generation across the region and improving the security and resilience of the wider network.
Working as part of the Siemens Energy project team, BT Bell provided civil and structural design input across the substation, including equipment and building foundations, Super Grid Transformer infrastructure, cable ducting, drainage and associated external works. The design required close coordination between civil, structural and electrical disciplines to accommodate the extensive high-voltage plant and services across the new substation platform.
The completed development included 275kV and 132kV GIS infrastructure and two 480MVA 275/132kV Super Grid Transformers, making Crossaig a key component of the reinforced transmission network serving the west of Scotland.
BT Bell’s experience in the design of major electricity infrastructure enabled practical, robust and buildable solutions to be developed while meeting the demanding technical requirements of this strategically important transmission project.
