Fyrish 275/132kV Substation

BT Bell provided civil and structural engineering design services for the Fyrish 275/132kV Substation near Alness in the Scottish Highlands. The development formed part of the Beauly–Dounreay reinforcement scheme, which strengthened the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland.

The project increased the capacity and resilience of the transmission network, helping to accommodate the continued growth of renewable energy generation across the Highlands and supporting its connection to the wider national grid.

Working as part of the Siemens project team, BT Bell provided civil and structural design services across the substation, including foundations for AIS and GIB equipment, the structural design of the GIS building, two Super Grid Transformer bunds, a steel portal-framed control building and site drainage infrastructure. The works required close coordination between the civil, structural and electrical designs to accommodate the extensive high-voltage plant and associated services.

The completed Fyrish Substation formed a key component of the reinforced transmission network between Beauly and Dounreay, providing increased network capacity and improved security of supply while supporting the continued development of renewable generation in northern Scotland.
